The end of summer is coming soon, so now is the time to enjoy live music, play some games or cool off in the pool — and even fido can jump in during Drool in the Pool.

Here’s a list of what’s happening as July ends and August begins — just before Indiana University students return for the fall semester.

Advance Base performs soft rock at The Bishop

You can start the weekend early — on Thursday, July 31 — by listening to the melancholic soft rock recording project Advance Base at 9 p.m. at The Bishop. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door for the age 18-plus show with Amy O and David Woodrufff. For more or to purchase tickets, go online to www.bishopbar.com/events.

Games for kids and adults at the public library

Just before school begins, the Monroe County Public Library will have its Summer Art Club for kids ages 6-12. The club allows kids to create beginning at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the downtown Monroe County Public Library, 303 E. Kirkwood Ave.

For adults, Thursday at 5:30 p.m. they can participate in the Adult Lego Club at the Southwest Branch of the library, at 890 W. Gordon Pike. It’s for anyone age 18 or older. Register in advance, online at https://mcpl.info/.

Cool off in the pool watching the classic ‘American Graffiti’

Cool off while watching the 1973 movie classic “American Graffiti” at Bryan Park Pool, at 1100 S. Woodlawn Ave. The pool opens at 8 and the PG film begins at 9 p.m. Admission is $7 per person. You get a chance to travel back to 1962, watching a couple of high school graduates spend one final night cruising the strip with their friends before heading off to college. Sounds kind-of familiar doesn’t it?

Music in Bryan Park on Sunday

With a forecast of cooler temperatures this weekend, it will be a good time to head to Bryan Park on Sunday, Aug. 3, to listen to the music of Rearview Rhonda (performing garage/punk) and Limestone Nomad (playing contemporary bluegrass). Bring a blanket or some chairs and possibly a picnic 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Drool in the Pool at Mills Pool

Cooling off in the pool isn’t just for people. On Wednesday, Aug. 6, people and their well-behaved dogs are invited to participate in Drool in the Pool at Mills Pool, from 5-8 p.m. Admission is $5 per dog (with one person per dog). Dogs can get their paws wet, play with tennis balls and other chew toys and compete in fun contests to win prizes.

There are rules for people and their pets: Dogs, 6 months or older, must be spayed or neutered; leashed (no retractable kinds) and well behaved. People are not allowed in the pool and must present proof of current rabies vaccination.

And if you can’t make it on Wednesday, Drool in the Pool will happen again on Thursday, Aug. 7. It’s at 1100 W. 14th St.

2 food-fun events happening Saturday

As reported in the On the Menu column, Saturday, Aug. 2, is the day for the new Taste of Bloomington, 3-10 p.m., along East Kirkwood Avenue between College and Indiana avenues. Fifty-two food vendors will be selling their special fare for $5 or less. Adult beverages will be available. And there will be two stages providing live music.

Also on Saturday, the Garden Smash & Community Fest will be 11 a.m.-8 p.m. at The Sinkhole Craft Beer Bar, 313 E. Winslow Road.
