20 tips to stay safe this summer

Summer is here at last, but with excitement comes the potential for risks and accidents. From swimming pools to road trips, remember that staying vigilant is the key to protecting yourself and others. Here are 20 safety tips to help you and your loved ones stay safe all summer long.

Driving safety tips

Unfortunately, more drivers on the road can lead to potential accidents. Whether you’re heading to a national park or a big city destination, responsible driving is a must. Practice safe driving with these tips:

  1. Pay attention: Rest well before long car trips and pay attention to all traffic signs and oncoming vehicles with your seatbelt buckled. If you feel tired, make a pit stop to switch drivers or regain your energy before continuing driving.
  2. Use your headlights: Always make sure your headlights are functioning properly, especially during hours with limited daylight and in extreme weather conditions.
  3. Avoid cell phone use: Using cell phones while driving is a major distraction and can lead to accidents. Phone calls and text messages can wait—keep your eyes on the road and pull over in a secure spot away from traffic if you must use them.
  4. Maintain a safe driving distance: Following vehicles too closely can result in a collision. Adhere to the speed limit and allow ample space between you and the car in front of and behind you.
  5. Don’t drink and drive: Most importantly, do not get into your vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drunk driving accidents see an increase in the summer months compared to winter. Always use a designated driver or a rideshare service if you are unable to drive.

Pool safety tips

Following basic safety rules in and around water is especially important during the summer months. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 4,000 people drown each year. To keep your family safe from potential accidents, here are a few reminders:

  1. Learn to swim: Everyone in your family should know how to swim—and if you’re still learning, know your limits in the water. Recognize potential water hazards, such as cold temperatures and water hygiene.
  2. Supervise children: Adults should actively oversee children and new swimmers by staying within arm’s reach and ensuring basic pool rules and etiquette are followed. Running around the pool deck and diving are common causes of pool accidents.
  3. Secure the pool: If you own a pool, install four-sided fencing at least 4 feet high and use self-closing and self-latching gates.
  4. Keep a clean swimming environment: Ensure there is no glass, debris, or other harmful objects inside or around the pool to prevent falls, choking, and contamination.
  5. Stay alert: Recognize signs of drowning and swimmers in distress, and if you can, have someone CPR-certified on standby. In case of an emergency, dial 911 immediately. Accidents can occur anywhere and in all types of swimming pools.

Grilling safety tips

The National Fire Protection Association reports that grills cause over 9,000 home fires and burning accidents annually. When using a grill, be sure to:

  1. Monitor the grill: Keep an eye on your grill to prevent accidents and your food from burning!
  2. Keep pets and children away from the grill: Animals and small humans can risk injuring or burning themselves near an active grill. Always supervise the grill and those around it.
  3. Never mix charcoal fluid with ignited coal: Using flammable liquid with already ignited coal can cause an explosion. Always use appropriate lighter fluid designed for charcoal.
  4. Use proper grilling utensils: Long-handled tools made for grilling keep the chef safe and burn-free.
  5. Always grill outdoors: Summer calls for being outdoors, and your grill is no exception. Never use a grill inside your home, camper, tent, or any enclosed area. Your grill should be kept outside and away from flammable objects.

Beach safety tips

Let’s not forget summer’s main highlight: spending time in our planet’s beautiful oceans and lakes. Stay safe in natural waters with these tips:

  1. Know your swim level: Oceans, rivers, and lakes have currents and waves too heavy for even some advanced swimmers. Recognize your comfort level and always wear a life jacket while on boats and waters beyond your swim level.
  2. Listen to the lifeguard: Avoid swimming in areas without lifeguards. Follow the lifeguard’s directions and check the local water conditions and hazards before swimming.
  3. Swim sober: Like driving, swimming under the influence is dangerous and can lead to drowning. Know your limitations and be sure you have the energy to swim when needed.
  4. Swim in pairs: Swimming with loved ones is a part of the summer fun. When out at the beach or lake, especially those without lifeguards, bring a buddy to keep an eye out.
  5. Stay calm: If you find yourself caught in a current or heavy wave, do not panic—signal for help and swim parallel to the shore. If you cannot swim, float or tread water until you are safe.

Enjoy summer by prioritizing safety!
