Corrections & Clarifications: An earlier version of this article gave an incorrect date for the drowning incident at the Hamilton Aquatic Center in Chandler.

A 4-year-old boy drowned during a private event hosted after-hours at a Chandler public pool on June 29, police said.

The Chandler Police Department responded to calls shortly after 8 p.m. of a child found underwater at the Hamilton Aquatic Center near Arizona Avenue and Ocotillo Road, according to Ryan Cody, police spokesperson.

Lifeguards pulled the boy from the pool and performed CPR until first responders arrived. The boy was taken to Chandler Regional Hospital, where he later died.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and those impacted by this tragic loss of life,” said Chandler spokesperson Matthew Burdick.

Chandler police confirmed the death was investigated as a drowning. It was unclear how long the boy was underwater.

What exactly led up to the drowning was still under investigation by police.

The Hamilton Aquatic Center is a public pool operated by the city of Chandler and part of a shared-use facility with Hamilton High School.

While the incident came in just after 8 p.m., the pool is closed at 6 p.m. on Sundays, the day of the incident, according to Chandler city’s website.

The pool was open after-hours for a private event with about 60 attendees, according to Cody.

The exact nature of the event was unknown.

The facility was fully staffed with 18 city lifeguards on duty, Burdick said.

Representatives for the city did not immediately respond to The Arizona Republic’s request for more information.
